Rev. Dr. Karri Backer
The Rev. Dr. Karri Backer has served at St. George’s for several years, at first as a supply priest for Sundays, then as Priest-in-Charge, and was recently called as the permanent vicar of the congregation. In addition to her role as a priest, Karri+ is also a spiritual director and therapist, and has spent many years exploring the intersections between faith, spirituality, and mental health. She is committed to helping individuals find healing and wholeness in their lives, especially within a spiritual community centered around the Gospel. She seeks to preach and teach messages that are relevant and meaningful to the challenges of our modern world, while also drawing upon the rich traditions of the Episcopal Church.
Karri+ has a BA from UCLA in the Study of Religion, an MA from Antioch University in Clinical Psychology, a Masters of Divinity from Claremont School of Theology, and a PhD in Practical Theology/Spiritual Formation from Claremont School of Theology. Prior to coming to St. George’s Karri+ held a variety of positions in and outside of the church including barista, jail chaplain, Head of School, retreat facilitator and therapist.
